Notes from Mr. Wojtaszek

Welcome back.  It's another school year and the air is filled with excitement and expectations.  As we all know, athletics are an integral part of the educational process here at Eldred.  Through sports, many positive values such as leadership, responsibility, accomplishment, confidence, fair play and respect are enhanced.

In addition, a few of the more talented athletes may use a sport as a tool to help build a lifetime future for themselves, receiving a full or partial athletic scholarship to a college or university. However, ultimately, the desire to participate in school athletics is and should be for the sheer fun and enjoyment.

In regard to the above, approximately 75% of our 7-12 students are involved in our interscholastic athletic program each year.  Our three-season sports program has some of the most dedicated and knowledgeable coaches in the area. Our community continues to be a fair and positive force, filling up the stands as well as backing the school's needs each year.  Our faculty gives extra time and effort to students, both athletes and non-athletes, who need and desire help in their academics.

Overall, with all these positives in place, and extra spots open on many teams, shouldn't your child be involved?  Please feel free to contact my office, 557-8039, for any needed information.  The athletes are anxious to get going and our coaches are ready to administer their new ideas.  Come join them!

SPORTSMANSHIP

In today's world, the preservation of traditional values can no longer be taken for granted.  One of these, sportsmanship, is being challenged on all sides:  professional, college, high school, and even in youth league sports.

In regard to this it is doubly important that we adults reommit ourselves to guiding our children, by example and discussion, that sportmanship is a valued quality wanted and needed in our society.

FALL SPORTS

Fall sports practice for the varsity and junior varsity teams began in August.  Modified teams practices began on September 8th.  Modified team members should bring practice clothes with them.  An after-school activity bus is available to take modified athletes home after most practices.  They only need to sign up during the school day.  Permission forms may be picked up at the Eldred Central School any day between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.  These forms must be signed and given to the coach prior to a student beginning practice.

All new students in Gr. 9-12 interested in joining a sport, please contact ECS for information regarding physicals, permission slips, and practice times.  Eldred will again be fielding boys and girls cross-country, and football teams at the modified, junior varsity and varsity levels. Based on age, most modified team members will be from Grades 7-9.

INTERSCHOLASTIC SEASON ADMISSION TICKETS

Eldred Central School District will once again be charging admission for our athletic contests.  The charge will be $2.00 for adults, $.50 for students.

In order to reduce the price and bring a savings to the members of the community, we urge you to purchase yearly tickets for the entire 2004-2005 school year.  For $12.00, an adult or $3.00, a student, may attend any athletic contest throughout the year at no additional cost.  For senior citizens, the yearly ticket cost is $1.00.  Tickets are transferable between family members only.

ACCIDENT INSURANCE

Accidents do happen.  With this in mind, the school district has insurance to cover accidents which happen on school grounds and/or school approved trips and activities.

This coverage is a secondary insurance program.  The purchase of complete coverage would be very expensive for the District.  Parents will have expenses according to their insurance limitations.  In its simplest explanation, insurance claims will go through the parent's carrier first, after which the school's insurance program becomes involved to pick up reasonable costs the parent's insurance does not.  For further information, please contact one of our school district nurses.
