Financial Aid & Scholarship Scams
The start of the financial aid season, when people should apply for financial aid for college, will be upon
us soon. It is also the time of year when scholarship scammers start advertising their phony scholarship services.
Unfortunately, in their efforts to pay the bills, many students and their families are falling prey to
scholarship scams. The Federal Trade Commission cautions students to look for tell tale lines:
• “The scholarship is guaranteed or your money back.”
• “You can’t
get this information anywhere else.”
• “We’ll do all the work.”
• “The
scholarship will cost some money.”
• “I just need your credit card number or bank account number
to hold this scholarship.”
• “You’re a finalist” in a contest you never entered.
• “You’ve
been selected by a ‘national foundation’ to receive a scholarship.
Families do not need to pay someone to apply for and receive financial aid for college. Several avenues
to receive help include the local high school guidance office, financial aid administrator at a college, and the New York
State Higher Education Services Corporation.

College in the Spotlight
SUNY @ Cortland is centrally located in New York, about a 2 and a half hour trip from Eldred, it’s also
in close proximity to Syracuse. With a campus of 5, 950 undergraduate students, Cortland still has a small town feel. This
is a moderately difficult level school for acceptance meaning; they look for a GPA of around a 2.8, ACT score over 18 and
at least a verbal score of 500 and math 500 on the SAT. Cortland is infamous for their School of Education in Physical Education
just ask any of our PE teachers. The college also offers majors in accounting, criminology, early childhood education,
visual and performing arts and many more. The tuition/room and board is around 12,600 per year. The student life
at Cortland will keep you involved and give you a chance to meet other interesting students, with over 100 clubs and activities
there is never a dull moment on campus. A visit to the college will be the answer to all your questions. If you are
interested in finding out more information on Cortland go to their website or visit your Guidance Counselor.
The Weighted Grading System
Beginning with the Class of 2000, students' high school transcripts reflect an unweighted grade point average. A weighted
grade point average is used only for determining class rank.
The following courses are weighted using a multiplier of 1.025:
- Regents Mathematics
- Regents Science and Regents English 11 courses
- Global Studies 10 and U.S. History (both Regents courses).
Advanced courses, weighted using a multiplier of 1.05, are listed as follows:
- Pre-Calculus and Calculus
- Composition, Creative Writing
- French 4 and 5, Spanish 4 and 5
- Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems
NOTE: Students must pass the Regents Exam in these courses to receive the added weight. Questions
about the weighted grading system can be directed to Mr. Feinstein at 557-8213.
ATTENDANCE POLICY/CLASS PARTICIPATION
The Board of Education, at its August 2002 meeting, adopted a revised Attendance Policy pursuant to new attendance
regulations from the State Education Department. The new Attendance Policy (Section 5100 of the Eldred Central School
Board of Education Policy Manual) has been distributed to all district-wide staff members, all students, and all parents in
the district. Additionally, the Attendance Policy appears on the new Eldred Central School web page (www.eldredschools.org)
To enforce this new Attendance Policy, a building-wide regulation on Class Participation has been adopted.
Class Participation will now be part of each student’s grade in all credit bearing classes. The purpose of a Class
Participation grade is to underscore the importance of class attendance. Class Participation will comprise,
at a minimum, 15% of a student’s grade. Class Participation may, however, be counted at a higher percentage
in certain classes, depending on the role that Class Participation plays in a particular class or subject area. For
example: Class Participation in Music or Physical Education may count for 75% or more of a student’s grade because
of the participatory nature of these classes. The 15% Class Participation Grade is a minimum standard.
The new Attendance Policy recognizes two types of class absences: Excused and Unexcused. The Attendance
Policy defines Excused versus Unexcused absences. Students who have an unexcused absence will receive a zero
for Class Participation in the class or classes they were absent from (a loss of 15% of the overall grade for that day).
Students with excused absences may make up the Class Participation grade. All students who are absent from classes are
responsible for making up missed class work. Since all students have new and tougher graduation requirements, including
but not limited to Regents Examinations and minimum credit allotments, students must take every opportunity to make up missed
class work.
